I love adding my own touches to traditional recipes 🙂 This sweet Modak/Kozhakattai puff is one such experiment. Modak/Kozhakkatais are traditional Indian desserts which are made during Ganesh Chathuruthi. I used puff pastry instead of rice flour dough. Surprisingly the combination of the flaky puff and the coconut was wonderful!! Is this is more easy than the traditional kozhakattai? YOU BET!!! 🙂 I also made some vegetable Puff from some leftover potato filling.
Sweet Kozhakattai Puffs Recipe:
Yields: 7-8 puffs
Ingredients:
- Grated Coconut – 1/3 cups or 6 tbsps
- Jaggery – 1/3 cup grated ( I used one big cube)
- Cardamon Powder – 1/3 tsps
- Puff Pastry Shells or sheets – 1 pack
Instructions:Â
Preheat the oven to 415 F. Take all the ingredients.
In a pan, heat water and Jaggery together till the Jaggery dissolves in the water. Once the water starts to boil, add in the cardamon powder and mix.
Add the coconut and mix well till the water and jaggery is fully incorporated in the coconut and the filling is thick. (You can also add a little bit of condensed milk for more deliciousness!). Keep aside.
Cut out the pastry sheets to smaller circles and keep the filling in the middle. Fold in the edges. Bake for about 10-12 minutes or till edges are brown – make sure you keep checking the puffs so that the filling does not ooze out!

Savory Vegetable Puffs Recipe:
Ingredients:
- Â Puff Pastry Sheets – 1 pack
- Vegetable Filling – 1 cup (I used this one)
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 415 F. Roll out the puff sheets to form rectangles and keep the filling in one corner. Fold but don’t press it too much.Â
Grease a tray and bake the puffs for about 10 minutes. After ten minutes, check if it the puff has browned, if not bake for another 2 to 3 minutes. Remove and cool for 1 minute.
Serve with ketchup!Â
