How to Make Easy Vathal kuzhambu Podi at home!


I own a whole array of different masalas… from my grand mom’s homemade Sambar Podi, to store bought chaat masala and garam masalas. The one thing I cannot find in the Indian store here is this Vathal kuzhambu podi or paste. Sigh. How I miss grand sweets.

I realized it might be simple to just make this podi at home. So here is my recipe of the Vathal kuzhambu podi (my mom read this in a tamil magazine and she translated it for me, so sweet she is! :D).

Vathakuzhambu Podi3

Cook time: 25 minutes; Yields: 8 tbsps (remember to proportion your ingredients correctly if you are making bigger batches)

Ingredients: 

  • Toor Dal – 2 tbsps
  • Coriander Seeds – 3 tsps
  • Dry Red Chilly – 6
  • Whole Pepper – 1 tsp
  • Cumin Seeds – 1 tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds – 1 tsp

Instructions:  

Dry roast everything one by one on medium heat till they turn red in color. Cool down.

Roast to a coarse powder. Store in container!
